Writing Review

Need some honest, reliable feedback on your writing?

It can be hard to judge our own work. Often, we’re far too critical – looking for mistakes or places where the writing just does’t seem right. We focus on everything that is wrong, and forget that we have moments of inspiration, good sentences and descriptions that we should be proud of. But, if you’re like a lot of writers (me included), you will always have that voice that tells you that you’re not good enough to be a writer, and whatever you’ve written is terrible.

But, what if you ARE good enough?

This is why I offer a 1,000 word Writing Review for those who want to see not just where they can improve, but also where they’re going right. I know how scary it is to share your writing, and how vulnerable it can make us feel; like we’re showing someone a part of our soul, and so in each of my Reviews I highlight areas that show your particular strengths in writing – be that description, great sentences, evoking emotions. And I promise you; there are elements of your writing that are uniquely brilliant, that you take for granted because this particular aspect comes naturally to you.

What if I know I need help?

Of course, I also want them to be useful, so I will identify areas to improve too. Now, I’m not an editor – so I don’t necessarily ‘edit’ the work. Rather I review it for what I call your writing ‘tics’. These are common crutches that we fall back on in our writing that can weaken the story, or parts of the narrative that don’t quite make sense to a reader coming in cold (because, let’s face it, as the writer we sometimes see our scenes so vividly we forget to show vital bits to our readers, assuming they’ll just see what we see!).

In this way, I look for opportunities for you to improve your writing. Not just the sample you provide – but your writing craft. I suggest things to look out for in other pieces, and try and highlight possible areas for development to make you a better writer all round. So not only will you get comments in the document, but I also record a short video to help contextualise my annotations – because I recognise how horrifying it can be to get a piece back with the horrid ‘red pen’ scrawled across it.

Check out this sample video to see how I explain the review for this story, and provide insights on how to develop your writing…

I found the feedback provided by Cat to be very informative and it highlighted areas I needed to focus on as well as providing very constructive criticism on my work.
Having a second pair of eyes proved very useful as Cat noticed things in my own writing that I would have missed, such as repetition of “favourite” words. It was also incredibly useful to have feedback on the story structure as I had edited the piece several times and so key information relevant to the characters had been lost without changing the scene to reflect this.
I would not hesitate to seek Cat’s services again & would thoroughly recommend her service.

Her feedback on my writing was spot on and constructive as well as being very technical. The addition of her helping me with the structure of my story also helped massively!
